The quest

We are so excited by the launch of The Love of Chilies web site. Now we can supply hot, fiery chilies to your home. Our quest took more than two years.

Finding the right chilies

Finding organic chilies was much harder than we had imagined. We tried Italy first, because Italy is a place where there is a wide range of organic products… besides, Italians love their spice. Fail! Maybe Italians just are smarter than the rest of us and keep their best products for their own personal use.

Lanzarote's Finca la Sarantontona, home of our chilies.

By pure luck we stumbled upon friends of friends who grow chilies on their organic farm on the wind swept, Spanish volcanic island of Lanzarote. Some farmer had brought the original Pequin plants from Mexico to the island years ago. Pequin are aromatic, extremely hot and need to be hand-picked. We love them.

The perfect process

Our second challenge was the process. Without the kind experts at the Department of Food Process Engineering of the Technical University of Berlin, we would have failed here, too. After personally sampling countless pressurized sauces and all kinds of drying procedures (and gasping for air) it was clear: Freeze drying, while expensive, was the best. So here we are.

We are proud of these beautiful chilies and really hope you like them as much as we do. And please tell your friends, we are spending all we have on chilies, not on marketing.

About us

Josefina Petrus and
Anna Yukiko Bickenbach

We love chilies; both of us from childhood. Our backgrounds could not have been more different. Josefina accompanied her parents on trips to India. Anna grew up on three continents, including on the island of Okinawa, where chilies are soaked in sake.

Both of us have had the opportunity to do many fantastic things. Josefina has produced films, coached basketball, worked for the charity platform Betterplace.org and served as a Board Member of a British school. Anna plays serious volleyball and co-founded the ecological platform Ecotastic.

We don’t like to compromise… if it is possible to have the best quality, why do for less. And we casually relish chilies like others do candy.
