10.01.2014 · Health benefits of (organic) chilies and, yes, we love the pain, too.
At The Love of Chilies, we are always on the lookout for new and interesting facts about chilies. There have been many reports in recent years about the health benefits of chilies.
In this blog post, we summarize the articles we have found the most interesting in the past weeks, discussing health effects of chilies.
This summary of the health benefits of chilies appeared in the Texan paper The El Paso Times. It covers the serious (like cardiovascular diseases) as well as the fun stuff (Aztecs used chilies to cure tooth aches).
We were not aware that chilies have been associated with combating cancer for a while already. This article from 2002 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute JNCI (Oxford Press) says that “capsaicin in hot chili peppers makes tumor cells commit suicide.” We are not doctors and we cannot make any medical recommendations, but it does sound impressive.
We were surprised by a small footnote in this article by the nonprofit George Mateljan Foundation, because it actually mentions that (non-organic!) chillies are among fruits with the highest level of pesticide residues. It cautions that only organically grown chillies should be eaten, something we think makes a lot of sense. The Finca de la Sarantontona, our partner farm where we source out chilies from, is organic and practices sustainable agriculture.
We love people who take fresh, contrarian perspectives. In this New York Times article, a psychologist is quoted who says that, yes, chilies might be healthy, but we eat them mostly because we love the pain.
Josefina Petrus and
Anna Yukiko Bickenbach
We love chilies; both of us from childhood. Our backgrounds could not have been more different. Josefina accompanied her parents on trips to India. Anna grew up on three continents, including on the island of Okinawa, where chilies are soaked in sake.
Both of us have had the opportunity to do many fantastic things. Josefina has produced films, coached basketball, worked for the charity platform Betterplace.org and served as a Board Member of a British school. Anna plays serious volleyball and co-founded the ecological platform Ecotastic.
We don’t like to compromise… if it is possible to have the best quality, why do for less. And we casually relish chilies like others do candy.
